The Associated Press, December 17, 2008 - WASHINGTON - The Federation of American Hospitals, which represents for-profit hospital chains, spent $740,000 lobbying the federal government in the third quarter, according to a recent disclosure form.

The association lobbied to amend the Public Health Service Act to promote the adoption of health information technology and on self-referrals to physician-owned hospitals. It also lobbied on proposed changes to Tricare, the Department of Defense's health care program for military members, their families and survivors.

The group's members include LifePoint Hospitals Inc., Universal Health Services Inc. and Tenet Healthcare Corp.

Besides Congress, the federation lobbied the White House, and the departments of Defense and Health and Human Services in the July-September period, according to the form filed Oct. 20 with the House clerk's office.

Among those lobbying for the group were: Karen Conwell Smith, former senior health policy adviser for the Senate Budget Committee, and Samantha Burch a former press secretary and legislative assistant to Rep. Al Green, D-Texas.
