Cedars-Sinai settles with Quaids for $750,000 PDF Print E-mail
Modern Healthcare, December 16, 2008 - Actor Dennis Quaid and his wife, Kimberly, have reached a $750,000 settlement with 914-bed Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, releasing the hospital from potential liability for administering a heparin overdose to the couple's twin infants last year.

The Quaids had not sued the hospital over the November 2007 error. The payment, according to a petition the parties filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Dec. 15, absolves Cedars-Sinai from any claims that could be brought by the parents, though it does not preclude any action in the future by the now 1-year-old children, Zoe and Thomas.

The parents, meanwhile, have a pending complaint against Baxter, the drug’s manufacturer, claiming that similar packaging used for drastically different dosages of the blood thinner invited a dangerous mix-up. In a statement issued in the days after incident, without identifying the Quaid children, the hospital apologized and attributed the error to "a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures." A spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment on the settlement.

Dennis Quaid has become a vocal advocate for medical safety. In May, he testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform during a hearing on whether Food and Drug Administration approval should pre-empt the ability of consumers to sue drug and device manufacturers in state courts. He's scheduled as a keynote speaker for the 2009 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference. -- by Gregg Blesch
